Frequently Asked Questions
about the Fox/Wolf History Project

What was the History Project about?
The Fox/Wolf Rivers Environmental History Project functioned between 1995 and 2003 to provide local history education to northeast Wisconsin. No longer active, this group of volunteers significantly raised public awareness of the history of northeast Wisconsin's Fox-Wolf River basin. Its major original contribution involves first publication of history about the region's grassroots environmental movement 1923 to 1972. This movement was a major force in molding the environmental politics and culture of 20th century Wisconsin. The basin includes the cities of Green Bay, Appleton, Fond du Lac, New London, Shawano, Keshena, Crandon, Ripon, Green Lake and New Berlin.

The History Project's legacy includes a variety of forms including two videotapes, a music CD of original river songs, slide presentations, poems, more than 100 oral history recordings, photos donated to museums, the preserved notes of major conservationists, and magazine articles. If you have something to share, please contact riverhistory@yahoo.com

Are there other river history projects in my part of Wisconsin?
The Wisconsin Association of Lakes has been promoting local preservation of lakeshed histories, and the University of Wisconsin Extension has published numerous items on specific geographies. Also active is the River Alliance of Wisconsin and the Trees For Tomorrow educational center in Eagle River. If you need help starting a similar project in your watershed, there's a chance we could share lessons learned. Please contact us at riverhistory@yahoo.com

Where can I see stories collected?
This website has some stories sorted by sub-watershed. See "Explore Your Watershed" on our homepage www.wisconsinwaterhistory.org. Longer articles have been published in Voyageur, the magazine of northeast Wisconsin history, and in Transactions, the journal of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters. [A Transactions article is available on this site in PDF format.]

Over the long term, where are the stories, newsclips, etc., going to be stored?
A partial collection of oral history tapes, newspaper clippings from throughout the 20th century, photographs and other items is at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Cofrin Area Research Center. We're searching for a donor angel to preserve and exhibit these and similar materials, including much needed transcription of oral history interviews.

Does the History Project provide information in audio or video forms?
Yes. Our website features downloadable narratives and music from our CD, "The River Rocks-Northeastern Wisconsin's Environmental History in Music." The River Rocks is a collection of 10 original songs based on historical events. Written in the 1990s by Wisconsin songwriters, song lyrics are on the website.

Our videos, "Of Time and the River" and "The Day They Blew Up the Bog," are used in schools throughout Wisconsin. We encourage classroom, nature center and school district use! Permission is granted, without royalty or fee, to copy the videos or song recordings for any non-commercial use. Permission is also granted to use the music, CD narrative or videos for a single-use, one-time broadcast by a commercial radio, cable, TV or web-based organization. Copies of the video have been gifted to many local libraries and school districts.

So there are songs about the Fox/Wolf basin. Is there also poetry?
Yes, glad you asked. The Fox/Wolf basin is a region strong in development of poetry. The first two Poet Laureates of Wisconsin came from the area! If you have website skills and would like to help get audio clips of collected poetry on this website, please write riverhistory@yahoo.com

Is there another way to learn about the History Project's stories?
We offer slide presentations to service clubs, conservation groups, teacher in-service seminars and civic organizations. Museums are encouraged to contact us for free assistance on northeast Wisconsin environmental history. In the past, exhibits based on the collection have been featured in local museums (including Green Bay's Neville Public Museum) and at environmental education centers. Call Paul 920 265 2623
